Issue No. 1 - FALL 2006

Editor's Letter

I am amazed to see how wonderful life can be when you are able to keep things in prospective by taking care of yourself first. I created this newsletter, and The Woman’s Day of Pampering events to help women understand that taking care of your mind, body and spirit are the most important act of love you can give yourself. I want to help women know that they are not alone in trying to maintain love, joy peace in their family life. I want my readers to share advice, experience, and happiness with everyone who has a listening ear.

Balancing a happy life continues to be a challenge for many women around the world. Caring for family, work, and career just to name a few have taken the life out of women causing heart attacks, burnout, mental and physical illness. If you take one thing away from reading this newsletter know that “When it comes to taking better care of yourself you are the most important, valuable asset you have”.

For centuries women have been caregivers for everyone in society except themselves. We must change our attitude when it comes to pampering ourselves. I have been asked by many women “What are some ways to spend time pampering myself”? Well, I have found that the answer is different for each individual. Pampering for many often means an uninterrupted bath, buying something pretty or a day off work.

Whatever makes you feel good about being a woman then keep doing it. Life is too short to allow life’s anxieties to zap our energy, joy, and happiness, due to worrying about the countless responsibilities we have accepted and others have placed on us as women. I am challenging you to take your life back. You own what you choose to do with your life everyday, as well as where you spend your precious time. In doing so, I am encouraging you to take time to smell the roses and view the blue sky. Take a walk in the park or sit by a stream of water. Give yourself time to t-h-i-n-k. Pampering is the gift of self love that only you can give yourself. It shows how much you love who you are. (a beautiful woman)

The Voice of Inner Beauty

Most people say that “Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder”. Do you really believe this statement to be true? What dose beauty mean to you? Is it long hair, white teeth, a cured shape, blue eyes, or long nails? All the things I’ve just mentioned are all physical attributes of beauty. Beauty comes from the qualities a person develops from the inside.

Webster describes beauty as the aggregate of qualities in a person that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. For that reason, I believe that beauty stems from what an indivial values within. It is showing kindness to others, a self- sacrificing attitude or just living by the golden rule. It also means showing love to your enemies or just feeding the hungry. Whatever, you feel it means to you then show its face in all that you do. Let’s talk more about the voice of inner beauty.

When it comes to exalting ones mind and spirit self talk can either help or destroy our inner beauty. Because “We are who we think we are”. Each time you say negative things about yourself you tear down your own mind and spirit. Here are a few examples of what I mean. Do you call yourself names when you make a mistake? Do you beat yourself down emotionally when you are alone? Is it hard to forgive yourself? Examine why you say negative things about yourself? Write down your reasons review them with a close trusted friend, one who is able to help you see yourself in a positive light.

Once you have completed this then begin feeding your inner thoughts with positive affirmations. Like, repeating that you are a good friend, sister, mother, aunt etc. If you find that the negative inner voice still interferes with your life to the point of blocking you from achieving your dreams, then seek professional counseling that will allow you to face your fears and begin healing your pain. A good way to start the healing process is to write down 10 things you like about yourself. When you have completed this task post this list in a private place for your eyes only. Then when that negative voice appears I want you to read this list aloud. Keep doing this until the negative voice stops.

What I like about myself.

Health Tip

Sometimes, we just do not feel our very best.  Many of you know what I mean.  During this time to the month you want to take extra time to pamper yourself.  Give yourself time to adjust emotionally to each situation as you go through this state of mind for three to seven days.  I have found that taking a few Evening Primrose with vitamin E helps relieve premenstrual conditions. It helps take the edge off the irritability, bloating, and breast tenderness. Be sure to get plenty of rest during this time because your body needs it.  Try not to make major life changing decisions during this time as well.  Let’s face it we are just a little off balance during this time of the month. If you don’t agree ask your husband, girl friend or significant other.

Stress Warning Signals
Are you listening?

Researches say that at least 75% of Americans surveyed describe their job as stressful and feel that job pressure is steadily growing (International Labor Office, 1993)
Stress related circumstance plague our society daily, as a result it has reached epidemic proportions. The only way we can change the effects of this conditions is to become more educated about the warning signals and its effect on our family, employers and love ones.

Pay attention to the warnings before it’s too late.  Too often, I meet women who have not heeded the warning signals.  Recovery is more difficult if the early telltale signs of distress are ignored.  Many of us think we can be heroes like Wonder Women, do the impossible, and over look the early stress working signs. Don’t allow this to happen to you.  When your job or home pressures first emerge as irritability, depression, insomnia, ill health, or a host of other early stress warning signs, take note because you are stressed out.  Take action immediately.  Stop for a moment and put you life in order.  This can be as simple as making your bed everyday or organizing your work space.  It also helps to   getting rid of the problem or adjusts to the circumstances to relive the pressure.  Slow down and take a day break if needed.  The world will still rotate on its axis if you take a day off to distress, regroup or refresh.  The important point to this is the world will continue to move even if you can’t.

One of the keys to reducing stress isn’t just removing negative experiences from your life, but adding positive ones. Berkeley Health Letter Associates.

An important factor to understanding stress management is to recognize your personality type which is defined by your specific behaviors and emotions.
Take the Job Burnout Check List. (Klarreick, 1990)

Check those symptoms that apply to you:
  • _____ I feel exhausted physically and or emotionally when I am at work
  • _____ I have lost interest regarding work or coworkers.
  • _____ I am pessimistic about my work situation.
  • _____ I have negative view regarding the future of my career.
  • _____ I distrust coworkers and company management. I am cynical regarding Relationships at work.
  • _____ I am abdicating my responsibilities at work.
  • _____ There is a change in my eating and or sleeping pattern.
  • _____ I am irritable and on edge, especially at work.
  • _____ I feel depleted and depressed, especially at work.
SCORE: If you have checked four or more of the above symptoms your depression can be the result of job burnout.

If you are experiencing burnout you should make immediate changes in your life. Here are some things you can do.

  1. Take aerobic exercise to release stored tension
  2. Take time out to meditate in a quiet place.
  3. Organize your time urgency perceptions
  4. Learn to value yourself as a human being
  5. Treat yourself to a back and shoulder massage monthly
Taking these necessary steps will help you cope with the levels of stress we face daily.

My challenge to you is to create a Wellness program for yourself. Your program should include, times of quiet and times of enjoyment. They can be spontaneous, frivolous, organized, with others or alone. The key is to be “in the moment” and not to worry. This is the challenge.

Empty Calories or Nutrition
What’s in the food we eat?

By Marla Byrd

The need for supplemental nutrition stems from our modern life style and the way we consume food.  Two hundred years ago most people lived on the land and picked fresh ripe food as it was required. The modern food industries and its multibillion dollar concerns are designed to generate massive profits from bulk distribution on the global food chain.  The problem is that soil is often nutrient deficient, the crops themselves are laden with chemicals and pesticides, they are then harvested when it suits the supply chain rather that when the crop is naturally ripe.

Typically crops harvested are processed, stripped of natural fibers and warehoused. They are then snap frozen or gassed treated, sent halfway around the world before arriving at the local market.  By the time we bake, broil, and fry our foods any enzymatic value are
eliminated such that most foods we eat are not only deficient in key micronutrients, they are of little more than empty calories.  Many “fresh” foods are deficient in nutrients we need for physical well being and optimal health such as vitamins, minerals, that trace elements like proteins, herbs, enzymes and essentials fats.  In addition, to these deficiencies most diets have an excess of refined sugars, salt, saturated fats, convience carbohydrates, additives, chemicals, residual pesticides and other harmful substances.

The combined effect of the excesses and deficiencies has led to propensity in industrialized nations of diseases that did not exist when we lived on the land.  Problems such as fatigue, digestive problems, headaches, allergies, diabetes, and more advanced long term problems such as obesity, cancer, heart disease, and stroke add to the result of inefficient nutrition.   Research indicates that many of these diseases have a basis of poor nutrition over a prolonged period of time.

Since no one is returning “back to the land” Herbalife designed to Cellular Nutrition Program as a modern solution, to a modern problem.  The cellular nutrition program is a supplement to the foods you eat, ensuring you receive every nutrient the body needs daily and having those nutrients absorbed at the cellular level.  The effect is that in addition to gaining or losing weight, we actually feel the effects in health and energy.  In addition, Herbalife has specialized products answering specific needs in key health areas. If you have any questions about the health or nutrition, and would like to learn more about obtaining optimal health, please feel free to contact Marla, Byrd at mbyrd122802@msn,com.

Malibu
By; April Davis

You spoke wonderful sounds of love
to me in a grand mysterious way
Lifting me up to a place so heavenly

You spoke wonder to me the day we met
And the night I slept gave me satisfaction

Dreaming of the quiescent sounds of earth
You spoke watery deep sayings of mirth

You spoke wonders to me… Malibu
Your strong mighty arms embraced my inner
Most thoughts and wrapped them around the center
of my body. Oh how I wish I could have stayed.

Were can I go, lost in your wonder of intimate sights
How could I not see your magnificent peace of lateral space?
Who am I that I may exist?

Whisper to me the unspoken sounds of wonder
In my ear, that I hear, so clear.

Travel with me your tide, your wind, your moon
Leave me with this breath taking view of you
Deeply brand my mind with the wonders of you.
Thank you passionately Malibu.
